OUR PURPOSE

We are concerned Americans, current and former elected and appointed officials, representing both parties. We all took an oath to uphold the constitution and protect our democratic system. We believe that system is now in grave danger.

Over the past half century, we have often disagreed. But we always put country over party, and we are united in our belief that the election of Donald Trump in 2024 represents the greatest threat to our democratic system and free elections since the Civil War. To save our American republic, Trump must be defeated.

History shows, and the current polling confirms, that a third-party candidate cannot win and will certainly hurt the incumbent president’s campaign. That’s why we are calling on the political organization No Labels to abandon its effort to nominate a third-party candidate.

All credible political polling makes it clear that a No Labels third party candidate would very likely throw the election to Trump — and thereby put our democracy and system of free elections in peril.

In normal times we would have no problem with this No Labels effort, and some of us would consider supporting it. But these are not normal times. As conservative Judge Michael Luttig told the January 6 committee, our democracy hangs on a “knife’s edge.”

In 2020 we avoided having a broken election by a whisker because then-Vice President Mike Pence and a handful of Republican state election officials withstood enormous pressure and put country over party and personal politics.

Former President Trump tried to overthrow the 2020 election process and our government, which operates according to the Constitution and our rule of law. To this day, he still refuses to accept the decision of the American people in that election. That reality alone should disqualify him from being president again. A second Trump administration would undermine our 240-year experiment in self-Government.

That is a risk our country cannot afford to take. For that reason, we ask No Labels to end its effort to nominate a third-party candidate. We make the same request of those mounting—or contemplating—any third-party effort in next year’s presidential election.
